About

Hey there, I am a vegan athlete and runner based in the 818. When I’m not eating plants or running, you can find me voraciously consuming content, traveling, and annoying my dogs. Below are the details.

RUN MARY RUN started as a running blog that chronicled my attempts to qualify for the Boston Marathon (spoiler alert: I did!), as well as my transition to veganism. Although it’s still a running-health-fitness blog, it has expanded to include some of the other things I’m into; you’ll find that stuff under the Extra tab. Lastly, under Projects you’ll find the organizations and campaigns I’m involved with, as well as a call for collaboration. Check it out if that piques your interest. So basically, if you’re into buffets, you’ll dig this blog.

RUNNER BIO – THE STORY

I received my first running medal in the third grade when I captured the bronze in the 50-yard dash at the all-Catholic schools Knights of Columbus Track Meet in the San Fernando Valley. Thinking I had peaked at eight years old, I didn’t pick up the sport again until my late 20s, which led to a few 5Ks, a couple half marathons, and one full marathon. I retired my shoes again in my early 30s, only to pick up running one more time at the ripe old age of 41. Strangely, my body has cooperated, and since (re)lacing up my Nikes nine years ago, I’ve completed a few 10Ks, twenty-plus half marathons, and nine marathons. This blog catalogs my challenges as a vegan athlete “of a certain age” and diminutive size (think hobbit). Follow me on my quest to chase my goals, run strong and injury-free, even as my dinner times continue to get earlier. Seriously, if I can do it, anyone can.

THE OTHER STUFF

I work in a high-rise in the manufactured business district called Century City. My job pays me a ridiculous amount to basically answer phones and move emails around (yay graduate degree!), and since it doesn’t take up too much head space or time, I can pursue my extracurricular interests, like those mentioned in this blog. Husband and I are DINKs, so we for sure use up our frequent flyer miles. We’ve traveled to Europe several times, including Paris over 8 (!), as well as hiked into Machu Picchu, snuck into Cuba, and spent the night in the middle of a volcano (v. uncomfortable but not for the reason you would think). However, the driving force in my life is my faith and service. Husband and I have been well overpaid, and we have made it a priority to give, whether through our volunteering, activism, or resources. It is nice to meet you, and I hope that you find something that entertains or helps you on my blog. Below is the more personal info.

STRONG DISLIKES

Raisins in food, indiscriminate hugging, and flying economy.

PEOPLE AND THINGS I WILL FIGHT YOU ABOUT

Gwyneth Paltrow and Lebron James.

Ugly shoes and the Oxford comma (the law is on my side).

WEIRD STUFF I DIG

“The Bachelor.” And all Bachelor-related shows, including The Bachelor parody show “Burning Love” and the fictional (?) expose “UnREAL”. These shows complement each other and work synergistically to provide an indecent feeling of superiority, disgust, and schadenfreude. Yes, yes, all the good feelings.

Reading about bad food in the English countryside.

  1. Hey! I see you’ve read “Yes, Please” and “Eleanor & Park!” I’m looking for a few fellow readers to look at my book and possibly review it for me. I have a very short trailer and the first chapter, audio-book version, to check out! I’d give you a shout out on my youtube channel if you did!!

    Here’s the Goodreads link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2

And the first chapter sample audio-verson: https://youtu.be/ycOKAz_kCqs

    Thankful for any support!

    1. Hi! I haven’t read “Eleonor & Park” yet, though it’s on my list. I’m not sure I’m your target audience? At any rate, can you re-send the goodreads link? It goes to Harry Potter (you’re not JK Rowling, are you?).

    2. That link works! I like some YA — I enjoyed Hunger Games and have E&P and a few other books on my list. I’ll listen to your trailer and let you know. Either way, best of luck to you and thanks for reaching out. 🙂
